Craig Medson

Craig has always been interested in every facet of the arts.  After three years studying Fine Arts at the Queensland College of Art (majoring in sculpture) he spent a year in Carrara, Italy studying the art of marble carving.  He then returned to Australia and had a solo exhibition in Sydney in 1982.

In 1983 he received a scholarship from the Italian Government and returned to Carrara  for 15 months studying and working, primarily in  marble.   On his way back to Australia he travelled through Europe and the United States visiting many artist friends he had met in Carrara.  In 1987 he and his wife Fiona relocated to a rural location 80km north of Brisbane at Maleny where he built a bluestone studio specifically designed for future sculptural endeavors and also a bluestone house.

He works mainly in marble and sandstone and has started to incorporate bronze elements in his work.  In recent years commission work has become a large part of his work involving a vast range of materials and styles.

He has attended and organized many symposia previously and in 1998 he returned to Carrara to work at Studio Nicoli for two months.  He expresses strong family values in his work.

“I try to make my sculptures appear light, rhythmic and with the element of movement…..often belying the weight they really are.  I aim always to create sculptures that emit an aura of beauty, harmony, balance and peace”
